Home grown cabbage is so much tastier than the bland, green cabbage available shrink-wrapped in supermarkets. You can grow cabbage for every season, however we stick to summer cabbage for, you guessed it, summer and Savoy cabbage for the winter as they are ready by Christmas and will last through until February as they are very hardy.

How To Grow Potatoes
There is little better than freshly dug new potatoes, boiled and served with real butter, and most veg gardeners want to grow their own. However potatoes can be tricky, particularly in an allotment situation because of potato blight. Therefore we suggest that if you are in a blight-prone situation or limited for space that you concentrate on new potatoes, particularly ‘first-earlies’ which are lifted before the worst of the blight and can be the making of a home-grown summer salad.
How To Grow Carrots
Carrots are an essential on any veg plot and with a little planning you can be pulling fresh carrots from June – Christmas and even as late as February in mild areas. Choose an early variety, we always sow Early Nantes, and a later one, we always sow Autumn King, to produce carrots through the summer, autumn and winter.
How To Grow Broad Beans
Home grown broad beans are completely different to those available fresh or frozen in the shops if they are picked young to give the small, sweet beans that can be used in summer salads. Broad beans are another crop with a range of varieties that can be sown over a long period to provide beans through the year.
